The Smoothbeam is a laser that treats acne by specifically targeting oil glands. It is ideal for patients who want an adjunctive treatment for their acne or for patients reluctant or unable to take traditional medications. Dr. Chiu may recommend Smoothbeam laser for patients who are pregnant, trying to conceive, or are breastfeeding. She may also recommend it as an alternative to serious acne medications such as Accutane. Studies have shown that four Smoothbeam treatments, spaced one month apart, can put acne into remission for up to a year! Best of all, it will also simultaneously smooth the texture of the skin, improving acne scars and softening fine lines and wrinkles..
What Smoothbeam Laser Treats
How It Works
The Smoothbeam 1450 diode laser is the first device specifically designed to target the root cause of acne, the sebaceous gland. It provides the perfect balance of controlled cooling of the epidermis with precise heating of the upper dermis, shrinking the oil glands and stimulating collagen production.
What Can I Expect?
When you come in for your Smoothbeam treatment, we will apply a topical anesthetic cream 30-60 minutes prior to your procedure. With topical numbing, you will feel a cold spray followed by a mildly hot snap. One to two passes will be performed over the target areas. After the treatment, you will have mild redness and swelling that generally lasts for a few hours. There is no downtime and makeup may be applied immediately afterwards. Generally, patients start to really see improvement only after the third treatment. Dr.Chiu recommend 4 treatments, one month apart to achieve optimal results.
As with all laser treatments, it is important to not be tan when having the procedure done. Dr.Chiu may recommend use of a bleaching cream to minimize risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
