Rosacea
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition of the skin frequently referred to as “adult acne.” It is characterized by redness, broken blood vessels, and flushing of the face and scalp. Patients may also experience pimples, swelling, itching, and eye irritation. Rosacea can cause social embarrassment and patients often complain that their face is “always red” or “people think I’ve been drinking when I haven’t been.” Triggers for rosacea include sunlight, caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, hot liquids, and extreme temperatures. There is no cure for rosacea, but fortunately, there are many excellent treatment options available for patients today.
At The Bellevue Laser & Cosmetic Center, our providers may prescribe topical and/or oral antibiotics to help get your rosacea under control. These medications are good for the pimples and inflammation associated with rosacea. However, they are only somewhat helpful for the underlying redness, flushing, and broken blood vessels. For those problems, laser treatment is required. We are fortunate to have the newest generation of the V-beam laser, the gold standard in treating vascular conditions. It may take more than one treatment to achieve your desired result, but patients are always thrilled by the outcome.
Patients with long-standing severe rosacea may develop rhinophyma, a bulbous thickening of the nose sometimes referred to as “W.C. Fields” nose. For this disfiguring condition, our providers may recommend surgical treatment , CO2 laser treatment, or V-Beam laser treatment.
Once your redness and inflammation is under control, our providers will also review the importance of a maintenance regimen for your rosacea. In addition to topical and/or oral antibiotics, sunscreen and avoidance of rosacea triggers will be an important part of the routine.
